Website blocking and filtering

Parenting in the age of the Internet poses a whole new set of challenges. ReassureMe.com is committed to helping you and all communities through this 'First Generation of Internet Parenting'.

A content filter is an application that acts as a shield between the Internet and a user's computer, blocking access from potentially objectionable or offensive material.  ReassureMe.com’s Netintelligence Service takes a slightly different approach to Content Filtering to some other more traditional content filtering products. On the Internet, parental content filtering (also known as information filtering) is the use of a program to screen and exclude from access or availability Web pages that contravene what a Parent would consider to be acceptable.

For simplicity, ReassureMe.com classify the World Wide Web into 8 categories of potentially inappropriate or threatening content, which a parent can simply block (for each individual user) by ticking the box.

We offer 3 alternative ways to apply Parental Web Filtering.

  • SAFE INTERNET
  • DEFAULT RULES, or
  • MANAGED INTERNET

Setting up the parental Web filtering takes approximately 2 minutes.  Please refer to our User Guide section for more details.

The categories of website that Netintelligence blocks are:

Adult

Peer-to-Peer (P2P)

Often referred to as P2P, peer-to-peer is a type of network on the Internet that allows a group of computer users with the same networking program to connect with each other and directly access files from one another's machines. Napster and Gnutella are examples of this kind of peer-to-peer software. Some producers of copyrighted content have sued P2P users for illegal file sharing.  P2P has become a significant source of computer malware infestation.

ReassureMe.coms Netintelligence central databases hold millions of records of websites that are published on the Internet, classified according to each of the above categories. These records are constantly updated as the Internet grows and changes. Each time a user visits any website, Netintelligence will check whether the website is listed under any of the categories that you restrict. If you have chosen to restrict these kinds of website, ReassureMe.com’s Netintelligence will block the user from visiting the site.

ReassureMe.com’s Netintelligence also lets you specify individual websites that you want to restrict access to, by creating your own custom list of ‘blocked’ sites.

Finally, you can use the category-blocking feature, along with the ‘allow’ list feature, to tell ReassureMe.com’sNetintelligence that you want to make an exception within a blocked category. For example, if you wanted to restrict a user from visiting gaming sites in general except for one particular site, you could tick the ‘Gaming’ checkbox under ‘Managed Internet’, and then add the single ‘allowed’ site to the ‘My Managed Websites’ list for the user, marked as ‘Allow’. So whenever the user visits this site, access will be allowed, but whenever the user visits any other site in the Gaming category, access will be denied.
